September 2025: John Behr - “Shades and Shapes, Dynamics and Dimensions"

What is “meaning”? How does it work? What is the nature of it? What does it do, and how do we relate to it in our daily lives as well as in art?
I've wrestled with questions about art since I was young. Not being able to figure out what art has held me back from just making it for a long time. My thoughts got in the way until I allowed myself to just make it without the pressure of knowing what it is or should be.
I understood that it ought to have meaning but I had trouble understanding what it should mean. It didn't seem to me that it should push a message onto the viewer or convince them of anything in particular but I just couldn't understand what it ought to do or how it was supposed to work.
I've gained insight into this by the act of simply making art as well as watching people in the act of looking at art and seeing and hearing their reactions.
My intention in showing my work is to provide a visual experience for the viewer that is their own. My works are meant to be a space for people to contemplate or to simply feel as they will.
For me, a monochromatic palate is the best way to feature the patterns and compositions that I hope achieves my aim.
