This colorful, saturated work contains linear fragments that imply architectural forms, right angles, measured lines and small graphite-like marks. “I came to Seattle in 1984 to study and to find a dynamic, creative arts community. After receiving my MFA in 1986, I’ve built a 40-year exhibition record while maintaining an independent studio in the Pike/Pine corridor, where I continue to prize the neighborhood’s creativity.
My work explores the tension between the natural and built world, juxtaposing linear structures with color and texture to create compositions that are both recognizable and abstract. Rooted in printmaking, I make graphite rubbings over reliefs of lead lines and steel pins, then seal the surface with layers of acrylic before applying oil color — creating hybrids of painting and print. I hope the work feels welcoming and peaceful, meditations on our modern world that reflect and enrich contemporary experience. I’m grateful that King County acquired my 1988 etching The Kite, and I would welcome representation by more mature works as well.” -- Mark Mueller
